Peter Doobinin
Peter Doobinin is the guiding teacher at NY Dharma. Peter has been teaching insight meditation since 1998. Since 2002, he has been a full-time meditation teacher, supported primarily through the practice of generosity (dana).
Peter is a founder of New York Insight, Downtown Meditation Community, and Berlin Dharma. For more than 15 years, before moving to Berlin in 2018, he was the guiding teacher of Downtown Meditation Community in New York City. Now, after returning to the US, he has started NY Dharma. In 2019, he began The Dharma Student Project, designed to offer one-on-one training, in an online format, to meditators looking to advance their practice. Over the years, he's taught at many places including the New York City Public Schools. He’s taught meditation and mindfulness skills at NYU, Columbia, Pratt Institute, Hunter College and City College of New York. He is a graduate of Spirit Rock Meditation Center’s Community Dharma Leaders program. Peter has authored two dharma books: The Skill of Living and Skillful Pleasure. His writing has appeared in Tricyle; Buddhismus aktuell; the anthology Commit to Sit; The New York Times; and other publications.
Before becoming a dharma teacher, for more than 20 years, Peter worked in the publishing industry for Simon & Schuster. He is profoundly grateful to the many beings, including his parents, teachers, friends, and family, who've supported him and shown him kindness as he's made his way through this life.
In NY Dharma, Peter's vision is to offer the Buddha's teachings of wisdom and compassion to beings living "in the world." For more than twenty years, he has been devoted to helping people find a way to practice the dharma as householders, meeting the various responsibilities of work, relationship, and so forth. As a teacher and leader of dharma groups, he has been motivated by the understanding of the importance of practicing the dharma with others. And he has come to know the extraordinary blessing that is it to be part of a community of likeminded dharma students. Through the years, Peter has come to see that if we make a wholehearted effort to practice the skills the Buddha taught, there is no questions that we will find a greater happiness in our lives.
